April 10, 2007 - SOPHOMOREPHONIC - the new album by ELECPHONIC!

Sophomorephonic is the second album from enigmatic and politically satiric artist Elecphonic. The first, self-titled album was a “whimsically Mercurial collection of nine tracks simmered and steeped in a stew of electronica”, and Sophomorephonic continues this quirky, bass-driven pedigree with eight well-polished and musically adept tracks...

truly independent press release.

kidameln - the kidameln lo-fi

The kidameln lo-fi is an eclectic and cool album from way out there in the indie prairie. It evokes a rich mix of alternate rock and hard pop with some very mellow twinkly quiet moments sprinkled in between.

kidameln's debut album delivers a lot in a seemingly short half hour. It's got an incredible variety of flavors over the 9 songs, all warmly delivered with great feeling in that indie diy home demo style. There is an obvious meshing together of diverse influences. After the first listen I could hear evidence of Dinosaur Jr, the Smashing Pumpkins, and even Concorde Dawn, but then when I looked at the artwork I was surprised to find a New Model Army logo in the collage inside, so go figure. There's no definition of who does what, which is kind of cool, but the art at least reveals who kidameln are. Michael Brennan [Seven dials/ Hussman/ the Feds/ and soon to be released solo project Phonoss], Warren Lawson [Pottery/ Puppichuk/ the Feds], Daniel Gannaway [Daniel Gannaway] and [the Now Awol] Stan Leboy. Apparently the kidameln lo-fi is a bunch of sketches, and if that's the case, I can't imagine what they'd have done if given the time and more resources. Sometimes though limitation creates beauty and I think this is the case here. Out on truly independent.

The Centre for Political Song makes note of Student Debt Sucks the second song on Daniel's latest album darling one year. It seems they liked the lyrics quoted below, especially in light of the debate in the UK over fees for university students.

"And all your talk of student debt/Increasingly exponentially/It's no wonder that you leave/If they just wanted to make money/Why didn't they say so?/Instead of lending you astray/Then saying you can't escape to/Somewhere you can make a dent/Against a growing debt/It's like a mortgage tied right around your young young neck".

truly independent press release.

Daniel Gannaway - darling one year

Daniel Gannaway's latest offering darling one year is an emotional roller coaster of intense, indie folk/rock, with the slightest hint of electronica.

Recorded in Amsterdam and London, and finished in New Zealand, darling one year comes loaded with solid lyrics, great bass playing courtesy of Michael Brennan [the Feds, and Seven Dials] and drum influence by Stan Leboy. Combined this with varied influences such as the 4AD Records stable and New Zealand's own indie rock scene, and you’ve got one remarkable album. Some songs start out folk and end up rocking, others just stay folk, Gannaway's acoustic guitar always constant, winding through distorted vocals, effected guitars, drums and looped sounds.

This album travels further along that path his previous album Bound and Suburban started upon.

A welcome new chapter in this talented singer / songwriter’s ongoing story.

Out now on truly independent.
